Merco walked sowly towards the lab, pausing to double check his backpack. For the third time, he confirmed that he still had the supplies that he had packed this morning, and hadn't someho lost them on his 1 hour journey.
Reaching the door, his chest swelling with exitement, Merco rapped politely on the door before opening it slowly. "Um, hello? Professor?"

Another knock on the door, another future beginning to unfold. For the third time in the space of a few days, the Professor was interrupted by an eager new trainer wanting his first pokémon. He might have been annoyed, but, in truth, it pleased him no end to see the enthusiasm that the new trainers had.
He stood, walked to the porch and jerked the door fully open. His first impression was of a messy teenager. It was his second impression too. "Hello? Let me guess, you want a pokemon?" he sighed.

Merco walked in slowly, aware of the attention his nest-like hair was recieving from the professor. When his back was turned, Merco groped through it with his fingers, attempting to pull out as many of the spearow feathers that had become lodged there last night.
"Yes sir! Thank you!" Merco quickly stopped searching through his hair, aftraid that the prof would catch him in the act.

He led the boy to his Lab, where the nine pokéballs lay waiting. He glanced back at the boy before plucking them out of their holsters and spreading them on the table.
"Now... I have nine starters. You should know them all, but I could go over them with you if you want. But right now, you can also start off with..." he walked to a shelf laden with pokéballs, picking three.
"These hatched yesterday, and I've been keeping them for new trainers. They are Zigzagoon, Swablu and Aron, in that order." he placed them beside the other nine, forming a row of twelve. The nine were very popular, but occasionally new trainers wanted more exotic breeds. Not that the last three were, but you never knew.

I should have known...
"Sure." He picked the apropiate pokéball, enlarging it and releasing the pokemon inside. It materialised in a blinding flash of red, cowering on the floor. It was unusual, for where the average Swablu had blue, it had bright gold amid its cloudlike wings. Its sparkling eyes spotted the new trainer, and it let out a faint chirp of intrest.

Merco gasped at the sight of the beautiful little bird. Crouching down to the level of the bird, Merco took out a berry he had packed from his bag and offered it to the Swablu, making a cooing noise with the back of his throat.

The hesitant pokémon moved forward as if to take it, but retreated behind the prof's legs. Then it thought better of it, and jabbed forwards with its beak quickly, taking the berry. It had no need of it at that moment, so it held on to it.
"It's very cautious, which, while raising its defence, will lower its speed. But it seems to be interested in you, so you can take it." the prof said, offering the pokéball. While the bird explored its new trainer a little more, brushing him with its wing cautiously, Prof. King made his way around the lab, snagging the items the starter kit would contain.

Merco delicately picked up the cute little bird, which he had already named. Placing her on his head, he chuckled with pleasure as she settled down happily. "She's absolutely perfect professor. I promise you I will take good care of her."
Taking the items for his starter set, Merco packed them into his backpack, always making sure that he was balanced enough for his new companion to stay comfortable. "Well then prof, I think I sould be away now. Come on Ciel!"
Waving goodbye, he turned and walked carefully out of the lab. Ciel perching on his head happily.
